Peace Bridge, Inc. was founded in 2007 to carry on the legacy led by the late Hugh F.X. O’Reilly and the Hawaii-based 27th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army, also known as the “Wolfhounds.” The name of the non-profit organization was derived from the title of a book written about Sergeant O’Reilly and the relationship between the Wolfhounds and Holy Family Home, an orphanage in Osaka, Japan called, “A Bridge of Love from East to West.”

On Christmas day in 1949, a dozen soldiers from the 27th Infantry Regiment “Wolfhounds” accompanied a Red Cross field representative to a holiday party at the Holy Family Home orphanage. The soldiers were touched by the conditions the orphans were forced to live under, due largely to a severe lack of funds. On the regiment’s next payday, the soldiers took up a collection, proceeds of which were donated to the orphanage on New Year’s morning.

The plight of the orphans quickly became common knowledge to all the soldiers of the regiment. For the next six months, the Wolfhounds spent their spare time helping the Sisters repair the orphanage. The soldiers came to know the children well and began collecting funds for Holy Family Home on a regular basis.

In 1957 a new tradition began. The Wolfhounds hosted orphans from the Holy Family Home for an once-in-a-lifetime trip to Hawaii. Allowing them to experience family life through home stays with Wolfhound families, and to experience the wonders and Aloha of Hawaii.

The following year, the Wolfhounds sent two soldiers to the Holy Family Home to act as “Father Christmas,” bearing gifts for all the children.

These two traditions continue to this day.

For more than 60 years—one of the longest military/civilian relationships in the history of the Army—the Wolfhounds have given generously to the children of Holy Family Home and forged bonds that have changed the lives of both the children and the soldiers.

The mission of Peace Bridge Inc. is to support, perpetuate and build upon this unbroken tradition of compassion and friendship with the Holy Family Home orphanage in Osaka.
